I focus on keyboard shortcuts and prefer using the mouse minimally. I used Windows 8 before, which wasn’t great because I had to rely heavily on the mouse. Here’s my thought: upgrading from W7 to W8.1 (update 1) this weekend might be worth it if you’re a programmer who enjoys key combinations. Many programmers use similar setups, and stability improvements could help. You often face administrative issues in W8, like ARM bugs for Android Studio or Boost C++ problems. Let me know your OS version if you want more tailored advice!

I've worked with Windows 7 in most situations, visited numerous companies with developers who erode my understanding, and they mostly stick to Linux or Windows 7.

I run Windows 8.1 without the Metro interface. I’ve enabled StartIsBack! – a third-party tool that runs smoothly and outperforms the built-in Start menu. I prefer Windows 8.1 mainly for its speed. I dislike the Metro UI and have turned off all hot corners, using StartIsBack instead.

Is the extra work and third-party tools truly necessary to bring your Windows version closer to the previous one?

You primarily rely on touch controls and gestures, using the mouse only when necessary for specific tasks.

It's affordable, works smoothly with Windows 8.1, and all shortcuts function properly. I suggest it if you're using the W8 Logan from TekSyndicate—it also supports it and has positive feedback. Check out his video "De-Suck Windows 8" on YouTube for more details.
