Hey everyone, I'm setting up my first gaming PC and have a few questions. What component usually causes lag? Should I invest the most in a CPU, GPU, or something else for smooth performance and high FPS? Also, does using an SSD help reduce lag? I'm looking for advice on the best parts to include. Lastly, if I combine the i54960 and MSI Radeon 4G R7 370 together, would that affect lag during games like GTA? What frame rates can I expect? Thanks! Cam

Choose a CPU and GPU that work well together without one limiting the other. The processor shouldn’t slow down the graphics card and vice versa. An SSD speeds up loading times but doesn’t boost frame rates. As long as the hardware is solid, it shouldn’t cause lag, though you might need to adjust settings for smoother gameplay.

Technically, lag stems from a poor network connection, unrelated to the computer. Low FPS results from inadequate hardware or equipment not suited for the task. When combining these elements, they should work, but adjust settings to medium or lower.

Primary reason for slow performance stems from GPU and CPU limitations when they can't handle the game's requirements. This depends on your current settings, quality adjustments, and anti-aliasing level. For optimal gaming, invest in a solid quad-core CPU (at least i5 or overclocked Pentium). Then allocate your budget to a mid-range GPU—around $200–$250 minimum. If you can afford it, go for an R9 290 or higher, 285, or NVIDIA 960/970 to eliminate lag. A high-end R7 370 with i5 works for GTA with tweaks, but upgrading to a better GPU improves visuals.

Absolutely, insufficient VRAM can lead to performance drops even with a strong GPU like the GTX 580 through 770.

The CPU and GPU are crucial, but for gaming, the majority of your budget should definitely focus on the GPU.

As mentioned, lag often comes from network issues. Too many connections on the same device, background downloads, or family members using YouTube can be the cause. Avoid using WiFi for online gaming. Besides FPS drops (already discussed), you might also face stuttering. This happens when the HDD spins too slowly or RAM runs out of space. Using a big SSD for games, plus 8-16GB of RAM, eliminates these problems.
