So, bit of a weird post but wanted some input so hear me out. Basically my motherboard has started to give me problems recently (Problems detecting RAM and occasional issues booting), currently running a AsRock Z77 Extreme4 with an I7-3770k. Because of the problems + age of the hardware, I am planning on letting this hardware live as long as it can then when my motherboard gives up the goat, upgrade my board, CPU, and RAM. I know someone might say "Why not just get a new board that supports that CPU?", well the problem is I want this stuff to last me awhile so I would rather not risk it with used hardware so I want to buy new. And from what I can find, there aren't really many reasonable options in terms of a new board that would support my old CPU. So I guess I was wondering what people think I should upgrade to? Don't need something insane like a 9900k or something, but looking for it not to be so cheap that it is a bottleneck for my 1070 TI Hybrid. Mainly use the system for gaming/web browsing/coding. These boards tend to last longer than expected, often lasting through their final strings. It really depends on how much time you're prepared to invest. My old socket 775 model was experiencing issues too—system won’t boot, audio freezes, phantom USB connections and disconnections, and it kept making that persistent "ding dong" noise. This occurred during the transition from DDR3 to DDR4, which is why I addressed it before upgrading to DDR4. The same socket 775 I own still functions properly despite these challenges.
Absolutely, this board is quite solid, though it’s definitely had its share of wear. When I first got the unit, I realized the internal audio card was faulty and had to replace it. Now it works properly except occasionally it triggers an error code and keeps rebooting after shutdowns. To resolve this, I had to remove the CMOS battery for a while before reinstalling it. It would be better if the battery wasn’t being protected by the GPU, which forces me to uninstall the card each time. If it still performs well after about two to three months, I might consider upgrading just for convenience.
Place your GPU in the second x16 port for better CMOS battery access.
Looking forward to making improvements right away. Avoid damaging your GPU just because of the CMOS battery.
