Hey there, I've been tweaking my Skyrim mods lately because I want to relive the experience but the original version is really frustrating. It's currently stuck at around 52 FPS and the game crashes when I try to run components. My first thought was it was the CPU handling all those extra entities, but now I'm wondering if that's the real issue. I'm planning a upgrade to a 980ti by year-end and thinking about boosting my CPU too. Could swapping it out help? I'd like to keep the LGA1150 platform for now—no need for a new board unless I can squeeze bigger gains elsewhere.

I've noticed my CPU usage spikes between 60-90%, sometimes hitting nearly 100% when I scan quickly. That seems like the main culprit. Do you have any way to check GPU load? Right now, I only see fan speeds on EVGA Precision X, which go up to 80-90%. My RAM is about 6.9 GB, and I'm planning to expand to 16 GB as well. The hard drive I’m using is a 1TB WD10EZEX with solid state storage, and the PSU is a 600W i600 model.

I’m considering an Intel i5-4670K CPU upgrade, possibly moving to a different socket if it helps. Any advice on what would work best for me? Your insights would be super valuable. Thanks!

Use GPUShark for real-time GPU performance tracking. HWiNFO offers comprehensive monitoring but requires more setup time for a clear, structured view.

These Skyrim modifications tend to consume a lot of VRAM, which suggests you might be reaching the 3GB threshold on the 780 system.

At very high resolutions, your graphics memory might run out.

Sorry, I didn't need to say that I'm using 1080p. I have many mods installed, especially graphical ones. Here are my current upgrade ideas: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/zGfJ3C. I plan to test with GPUShark soon. I think the 980ti's 6GB VRAM would really help then. Thanks for the fast replies!

You're likely exceeding your VRAM capacity with numerous mods, especially graphical ones, and might be facing performance issues. Have you noticed any stuttering lately?

I’m not really dealing with stuttering, and the issue seems to be limited to one area with just a few mods. It’s mainly the 7K Better Whiterun – City Under Construction BETA version. (Excluding some custom player homes that push it too far and make it nearly unplayable inside certain setups) I keep around 50 frames per second when this mod is active. That 50 fps works perfectly for me. I’m just sharing this because, even though it’s not now, I’d really want to be able to enjoy this Skyrim version with the Oculus Rift next spring. I know I’ll need higher performance—above 52 FPS—for it to function properly. I plan to upgrade my PC this holiday season in preparation for that release. I ran GPU Shark and captured screenshots along with Task Manager and EVGA Precision X (sorry, those are actual images, not just screenshots—I couldn’t take three at once while playing). When I move quickly around in that tight space (where I see 20-30 FPS), the results were something like this: [link 1] and [link 2]. I’m not sure how my VRAM is handling the load, but it’s probably why I’m here asking for advice. When I’m just standing still in that area, the numbers look different: [link 3] and [link 4].
