I constructed a machine for my parents' home many years back. I went to see them and am working on figuring out what's wrong. When you attempt to power it up, the PSU clicks right away and then the system powers off immediately. Here’s what I’ve attempted: 1. Reset BIOS 2. Disconnected all parts except the motherboard, PSU, CPU, and RAM 3. Tested each RAM stick separately in its slot 4. Purchased a fresh power supply – it starts up briefly for two seconds before cutting out (no click) There are diagnostic LEDs, only the SB_POWER is lit. I suspect the board or CPU might have been damaged by a surge.

It seems the PSU was taken along, possibly due to a power surge. Check if they needed to reset their stove clock recently. They likely don’t use a UPS for the PC; they probably plug it directly into the wall.

That's exactly what I considered. It was connected to a power strip surge protector, yet it didn't resolve the issue. I'm aware that my fridge stopped working for the same reason. I just needed to double-check if there were any overlooked details before starting the new build.

It was an APC surge protector, probably the higher-end model. Those basic surge suppressors aren't very effective. This kind of device would have likely prevented damage, though it's tough to confirm since the utility company rarely shares details. Surges often occur during substation switches and rerouting power through new paths in their network.
