Identify issues by repeatedly pressing ALT-TAB until performance improves.
I've noticed some issues with my gaming performance on the new laptop I got recently. From the photos I took (which I couldn't capture), my games often run at low frame rates. But when I rapidly switch tabs (alt-tab), the FPS jumps noticeably, reaching 20+ frames per second. Watching benchmarks on YouTube shows what I should aim for, yet I struggle to hit that level consistently.
I've tried several fixes: updating drivers, reinstalling them, adjusting refresh rates, changing settings in Windows and NVIDIA Control Panel, even switching off the integrated graphics. Despite these attempts, the problem persists.
My laptop has an AMD Radeon Graphics (GPU1) and a Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 (GPU2). The specs suggest GPU1 usage spikes during low FPS situations, while GPU2 handles high FPS better. I'm unsure if changing the refresh rate affects performance, but it seems to help when I switch tabs.
I'm looking for a solution that allows stable high FPS without constant tab switching. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Consider assigning your 3050 to games directly. Access settings by navigating to System → Display → Graphics settings (the link at the very bottom). There you’ll locate the executable files for your games, add them to your list, and adjust the preference to high performance so it always uses your 3050. It seems the process starts by identifying your iGPU and then switching to the dGPU after pressing alt+tabs.
I chose to refresh my windows and maintain my personal files. It turned out to be effective. Unfortunately, I lost many programs during the process, but at least it solved my issue.
