Ideal Linux dustroom for a HP Compaq Presario laptop equipped with Pentium M
Hey everyone, hope you're all okay. I have an old HP Compaq Presario with a Pentium M processor and 256 MB RAM running Windows XP. I'm looking for a lightweight Linux distribution that works well with it, since XP is quite outdated. I've tried Lubuntu, Puppy Linux, Alpine (including MX Linux), Mint, and even some older Ubuntu versions, but they all crashed or caused kernel panics. The CPU stays at 100% while RAM usage hovers around 50-60%. I'm not sure what else to try except maybe giving it a shot and seeing if my younger sister can use it for browsing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
This won’t work unless it’s a purely text-based site. The system is too outdated to handle modern web needs without forcing the browser to run at maximum speed. I own another laptop with a Pentium M processor; even with 1GB of RAM—something impressive back then—it struggled to perform. Still, if you’re interested, try https://antixlinux.com/, the lightest distro I’ve found that remains fully graphical.
Gentoo (non-genkernel) is the best path forward. My Core Duo runs it, and it’s one of the few distros that handles less than 512 MB RAM—this helps avoid kernel crashes. Regardless, your laptop will likely struggle with today’s browsing needs. Watching web videos won’t work well, except for very low-res content (even 240p YouTube is tough). I suggest using i3wm as the desktop environment—it’s extremely lightweight. While it won’t be much faster than Puppy Linux, it keeps everything else minimal, making it as snappy as possible.
It would mostly run well only on a lightweight distribution like i3wm. For browsing, tools such as lynx or elinks work—text browsers that operate directly in the terminal. Personally, I’d just give up. A Core2Duo with 2GB RAM feels very slow and outdated, suitable only for basic GUI tasks outside remote maintenance. If needed, another option would be better.
