I own a six-year-old laptop that's still in decent shape and used for my everyday tasks. It has a full HD 15.6-inch display, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD with Intel Celeron N3450 processor running at 1.1GHz with turbo boost to 2.2GHz. I'm currently using Windows 10 Home but it's not performing well. Are there any simpler or better-supported lightweight operating systems that could run more smoothly on this device?

Very thin package (actually, it is), unlike those heavy *nix distros with lots of unnecessary stuff that slow things down)

You're checking what's running on your laptop. The CPU and RAM are often busy with the browser and apps, making performance less dependent on the operating system. What does the Task Manager display?

I installed Linux Mint using the Cinnamon desktop. That's what I've done on more than 40 laptops, many with limited specs. It's the system I've relied on for over ten years, and my partner has used it since my partner damaged her computer in 2018.

I suggest trying ghost spectre 11, as it delivers superior results on Windows 10/11. I installed it on a Celeron N4020 with 4GB RAM and was able to enjoy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 smoothly!

Garuda Mate or Garuda LXQT could be a good choice depending on your needs.

I've worked with Ubuntu on older systems before. It performs quite well without heavily impacting the user experience. However, for the highest possible speed, consider the alternatives mentioned here.

I suggest a Linux distribution that uses xfce and performs well on your sibling's older Celeron with limited RAM.

Mint offers a balanced choice that avoids extreme thinness.
