Hey there. Let's keep it short. I got lucky enough to snag an RTX 3080 from Newegg Shuffle—sign up if you haven’t, it’s a solid shot at getting a GPU, PS5, or even a Series S/X. The card came bundled with an Asus ROG Strix B550-F motherboard. I was considering selling the board but have started enjoying using Steam Remote Play to watch lower-poly games on my living room TV.
Before you ask why I’m sharing this, there’s a setup in my home right now where I’ve temporarily used an extra PC near the TV as the client machine. Eventually that extra rig will be gone, so I was thinking about building a budget build for streaming. My LAN is fast enough for 4K, but some games struggle to encode video while rendering. So I often stream in 1080/1440 and switch to 4K on the client side.
Anyway, here’s what I’m asking: I’m not super familiar with CPU needs for decoding 4K streams. I was thinking a Ryzen 3400G would be enough, so I wouldn’t need a dedicated GPU. Would that processor handle it well for my needs? For clarity, this is the client PC, not the one running the game. I won’t pair the 3080 with this build—my host PC will handle rendering and streaming.

My 3080 offers plenty of power for streaming games. I faced no problems with my older 2080 handling 1440p at 60FPS—especially better than encoding on a 9900k. NVENC stands out as the top choice for streaming unless you opt for higher-end cards like a 5900X or 5950X. For a dedicated streaming setup, a Ryzen 7 2700 works well; I’ve tested it at 1080P and it didn’t reach full performance.
The 2700 lacks built-in graphics while the B550 cannot work with 2000-series or earlier CPUs.
