I found a very old Compaq DeskPro in great shape. I bought an adapter to change IDE to SATA... I'll share the link here: https://www.newegg.ca/startech-pata2sata...wordsca-pc... Should I be able to connect an SSD to this unit, or will I run into unexpected issues?

If your setup is outdated and only supports an IDE connection, I’d really suggest upgrading to something more recent. What are you planning to use the computer for? You might want a PCI/PCIe card if possible.

It would be largely unnecessary given the IDE's capacity.

It's possible but limited to SDD or HDD devices only. Attempting to connect an optical drive will likely fail, especially with the models I own. You must also match the connection method according to your setup—whether linking from a board's IDE header to an SDD drive or vice versa—and ensure proper configuration. I have two converters that function, though using them isn't ideal if you can avoid it.

The existing IDE drive is nearly two decades old. Would upgrading to an SSD be a significant performance improvement?

I also wondered about the appropriate drive capacity.

What is the precise model number? Most systems had a capacity around 146GB. It would run faster, but what are you aiming to achieve with that setup? You seem to be building a vintage system—likely just need a better IDE drive.
