The icons are shifting into tighter columns, making the bottom area of the screen vacant. This appears to stem from resolution problems.

They just shift their place within the rows they occupy, as if the window doesn't retain the icon location and assigns it a new spot on the desktop.

There doesn’t seem to be a clear trend. I’d switch off and on all the sorting settings for the desktop. It’s possible the icon arrangement is stored in the registry, which might have been altered. Registry cleaners probably won’t fix this, though you might try them. The last thing I can think of is a piece of malicious software—though it’s unlikely such a thing would cause this specific issue.

I checked Google and it seems there’s a recognized problem with Windows 10. There are several potential solutions I’ll try one by one.
