Uncertain about the details, but if Gen 3 is being discussed for Intel platforms, X16 Gen 3 should handle the bandwidth needs of ampere cards—though we're not sure about the 3090's performance. In gaming, the 9900K remains a strong choice and should work well with a 3080.

What kind of performance are you seeking? The 3950x offers significant power with double the cores, making it much more efficient than the 9900ks in many scenarios, though it may not be ideal for gaming.

3950X performs better with a workstation CPU than for gaming. Avoid purchasing it if the user's focus is primarily on gaming. While 9900K, 10900K, 3950X and 3900X all serve as solid CPUs, each excels in different areas.

Media is shaping the story. It seems odd that critics are shifting focus to the R9 3950x for their reviews. Interestingly, the same reviewers once said the i9 9900k was too costly for gaming. I’m fine with AMD; I just believed the R9 3900x would have been a stronger choice because at $440 for 12 cores it offers good value and performs similarly to the $710 R9 3950x in games. As someone who uses a 5GB RAM setup, I expect to outperform them in gaming and underperform in productivity. It’s amusing that they claim 4K games are nearly identical across CPUs, yet some sources say they’re pointless. Just enjoy your i9—it handles games about as well as a 10th-gen Intel i5, and it’s great for streaming.

Thanks everyone. The feedback seems to emphasize more workstation AMD CPUs over Intel for gaming, which is great. Right now I’m mostly using 10K+ Formula Excel and Access databases, so gaming isn’t the priority. I think the higher core count in the 3900/3950 models would better suit workstation tasks than gaming. It might just be that I’ve seen many RTX3080 reviews and benchmarks using the 3950X/3900X, plus comments from Jay asking if anyone still uses Intel, which reinforced my earlier thoughts.
