i7 or R5?

Hi, I have an i5 6600k, GTX970, and 16GB of 2400Mhz DDR4 RAM. I also have three 1080p monitors. I'm thinking about upgrading and have a choice between an RTX2060 Super and an i7 7700k. I already own a B150 MBO, so I can skip the B450 MBO for the 3600. Since the i7 isn't too sensitive to RAM speed, I'll stick with my 2400MHz RAM. My main concern is which CPU to pick: the i7 for better single-core performance or the RTX for more cores? I can keep my MBO and RAM, which makes the i7 a bit more affordable and avoids reactivating OEM keys. I'm not sure which is better for gaming, but I'd like some guidance based on performance.

I might be able to increase my budget slightly for a better GPU or more RAM, but I believe it’s not essential for gaming at 1080p.

I’d put all my available funds on a GPU way sooner than anyone else here. My 2 cents wait, forget it. The 6600K doesn’t support HT—you’re stuck. 2600X, 2700X, 3600X, 3300X…

Your system came with a 7700k, which likely means it should still be supported unless those boards differ. Since the 7700k is quite expensive, upgrading to a newer CPU might not be the best choice. I’d consider getting an RTX 2060 and check if a more powerful CPU is necessary. Also, you can run a Ryzen on 2400 DDR4 without major issues—just a slight drop in FPS, but you can always upgrade later if needed.

You're right, focusing on future tech like the 2060 super seems unlikely to justify 1080p performance. A 2070 model would be significantly more expensive.
