I noticed an offer for a 980x on eBay. Could a 5600 XT create a bottleneck? If so, I’m willing to consider other GPU options.

It would need to be an incredible offer to surpass a Xeon X5670. What cost would that take? The performance limits really depend on the game and what you're aiming for.

980X running at 4.4ghz supports the 5600XT, but I wouldn't exceed the specifications unless you're playing at very high resolutions like 1440P.

The I7 980x works well but isn't my top choice. If you already have a motherboard (or can get one for under $50), the X58 is a solid option. But as mentioned, a X5670 performs just as well after overclocking and costs much less. Even a X5650 on a decent board delivers impressive results.

When planning an overclock (such as reaching 4.2+ GHz), the main limiting factor will be bottlenecks. It should handle 1080p well, but performance drops more noticeably at higher resolutions. If you don’t intend a heavy overclock, skip it. Current stock results are quite poor compared to today’s standards. The same applies to the Xeons referenced earlier. The i7-980x is much simpler to boost, though that’s essentially the only difference. Both can be pushed to similar high frequencies, depending on the amount of work you invest.

I also intend to open and likely play in 1080p.

Additionally, I'll review the mentioned xeons.

Yes, it works with both buffered and unbuffered RAM configurations.
