Hey there, I've been using my 4790k for years and was quite satisfied until I noticed performance issues in certain games. I decided it was time to upgrade my CPU. As mentioned in the title, I'm torn between the i7-9700k and the Ryzen 7 3800x. Over the past few days, I've watched plenty of videos, forum discussions, and benchmarks comparing them. Right now, the i7-9700k seems to offer better gaming performance (higher FPS), while the Ryzen 7 3800x shines more when you're doing tasks beyond just gaming. Since my main focus is gaming, I think the i7-9700k would be a solid choice for me. However, what about future needs? I tend to keep my CPU for a long time (I'm still using the I7-4790k), and I wonder if an 8-core 8-thread processor would be better than sticking with the 3800x just in case performance improves over time. I also have an AIO cooler (Kraken X62) installed, so Intel options aren't a concern. Here are my current specs:

- GPU: MSI RTX 2070 Super (new)
- RAM: DDR4 HyperX Fury RGB 3200 MHz CAS 16 (AMD Ryzen optimized)
- Monitor: G-Sync 144Hz 1080p

Thanks for your advice!

Choose the budget R5 3600 for gaming, or the R7 3700X for other tasks. You’ll likely need a 3600MHz CL16 RAM with a Ryzen 3000 processor.

I've heard many opinions about the 9700 not being a top-tier CPU. Others recommend opting for the Ryzen instead.

I’d aim for the 3700x setting. More threads won’t boost the average FPS, but they’ll lower micro stutters, improving the 1% FPS drops.

You purchased the DDR4 HyperX Fury RGB 3200 MHz with a 16GB RAM module and have already opened it, making a return in France impossible.

I’d choose the Ryzen 7 3700X since it’s significantly more affordable while still performing almost as well. Win Win.

You're all set. Adjust timings and frequencies as needed for optimal results.

The main variation is the frequency. It's odd how much cheaper it looks...

These options represent a significant improvement over the 4790k. From my perspective, 3700X offers the best balance of cost, performance, and flexibility. Sure, the 9700k can boost frame rates even more, but either CPU will easily exceed 100 FPS at 144Hz or higher if you're aiming for that level. Your current RAM is sufficient.

I wasn't anticipating that but I'm choosing the 3700X. The difference between it and the 3800X and 9700K is minimal—about 60€ more. It'll likely be my first AMD CPU, and I'm hoping for a solid experience. Thanks to everyone for your help!
