I recently acquired an MSI Trident X 9th with an i7 9700K and an RTX 2080, boasting 16 GB of RAM and running at 1920x1080. Since beginning to play games, I've observed the CPU consistently hitting full capacity while the GPU stays below 30%, often under 10%. Despite this, my FPS remains high across titles—GTA 5, Overwatch, COD:BO4, AC:Origins. Occasionally I experience stuttering. While my FPS is strong in most games at maximum settings, performance lags when I switch to lower resolutions. Benchmarks suggest my setup is underperforming compared to similar systems, for instance, a test on GPUCheck showed 176 FPS in BO4 with an i7-8700K, whereas I achieve around 100 and notice stuttering during intense scenes. In Hitman 2, my FPS drops to about 80 in crowded zones versus around 80 in open areas. Watching YouTube on a second monitor while gaming causes my frame rate to halve significantly, especially in crowded environments. I've overclocked the CPU to 4.9 GHz at 1.25V, keeping temperatures near 70°C, but performance remains inconsistent. I’m not very familiar with overclocking, yet these issues appeared before I even touched the BIOS. I reinstalled Windows 10 to clear preinstalled files, updated drivers, and cleaned up registry entries in File Explorer to remove unused shortcuts. I suspect there may be an underlying issue, but I’m unsure what’s causing it.

What rate and clock speeds are you applying to your RAM? Did you keep it at its original setting, or did you increase it? What maximum speed is the RAM designed to handle? Have you verified there isn’t an older BIOS installed? Did you attempt to disable overclocking and confirm the power configuration was set to full performance? Which type of CPU cooler are you employing?

RAM is available at 2666 MHz, BIOS is current. I adjusted the power settings to max Performance both before and after overclocking. The stock cooler for the Trident X 9th is here: https://us.msi.com/Desktop/Trident-X-9th/Overview

If it’s hitting that level, check the boost speed and application feedback; also look at RAM speed. If everything matches specifications for your GPU’s core and RAM, the problem likely lies elsewhere. You might use tools like HWMonitor to see real-time clock speeds while gaming, which would be more convenient with a second screen. If the CPU is properly turboing, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what’s wrong.

I reverted to default/auto clock speeds. Here's me running Hitman 2 at max settings, 1080p no motion blur, no Vsync, 144hz monitor.

That's what I feared about the 9700k when choosing between it and the 9900k. Some reviewers mentioned potential bottlenecks even at the 9900k, especially in AAA games at 1080p. I've seen similar issues with the 8600k last year. It seems we might not always have a fix for certain games at higher resolutions and frame rates. Now that we're past that, make sure your Windows isn't consuming 10-15% during idle. Upgrading RAM from 2666 might help a bit, but the CPU usage could still stay high. Do you know what your motherboard model is? It looks like an MSI rig, possibly with a Z390A chip, which could be the cause of these problems?

You don’t have to push your system too hard. I don’t overclock things, most components are basic and handle everything smoothly like a good knife. At 1440p I hit around 165fps in Quake Champions with Ultra enabled and about 143fps in Battlefield V on Windows 7. I actually end up with more frames than expected, but I don’t push beyond that.

You don’t have to push your system too hard. I don’t overclock things, most components are basic and handle everything smoothly like a good knife. At 1440p I hit around 165fps in Quake Champions with Ultra enabled and about 143fps in Battlefield V on Windows 7. I actually end up with more frames than expected, but I don’t push beyond that.

I found the answer to the “bottle neck” issue. Your CPU is fine. I spent a month trying to understand why my new i7 9700K was using so much power. Try opening Process Explorer for Windows and checking your CPU stats while playing a game. It shouldn’t be 100%, just during startup. I discovered Task Manager is giving incorrect readings when the CPU boosts. When all cores activate, it falsely raises usage numbers. I was relieved to realize my CPU is handling heavy loads perfectly. Avoid changing BIOS settings or overclocking. This explanation was straightforward—just your Task Manager showing wrong values during turbo. I didn’t do extensive research; I just downloaded Process Explorer or a similar tool.
