Hey there! Yesterday I upgraded my system with an i7 8700k and a new cooler (dark rock pro 4). During the cooler setup I had to remove the motherboard and move it outside, which meant disconnecting all my cables. Once everything was reassembled and I restarted the PC, everything worked perfectly as before. However, I started seeing blue screens when using prime95, and the CPU voltages jumped to 1.2-1.21 volts—way higher than expected. The base voltage listed in my motherboard should be around 1,144 volts. Shortly after, I noticed blue screen errors with WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR. I didn’t see any overheating, even under heavy load, where the CPU temperature stayed at a maximum of 68°C. Upon checking my motherboard, I realized I had mistakenly connected the CPU power cable to the wrong slot. The Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Elite uses a 2x4 12V 8-pin connector plus an additional 2x2 12V 4-pin connector. My PSU (straight power 11.55 kW) has two 4-pin connectors labeled CPU 1 -P4 and CPU2 -P8. Because the pin arrangements of the 2x2 and the closest to the CPU from the 2x4 are identical, I accidentally plugged the CPU1 -P4 into the 2x2 slot. After removing it and placing it correctly, the voltages dropped to about 1.15V during full load. Since I couldn’t run tests anymore, I didn’t see any blue screens afterward. Could my power connector mix-up be causing these issues? Or should I worry about a CPU hardware problem? Thanks for your time!

most electronics are built with a tolerance of at least 5% or sometimes up to 10%. This means the maximum voltage can be around 1.258V, so it should work fine.

The voltage drops noticeably after switching slots because the components rearrange, affecting how current flows. Initially, the setup draws more voltage, but once the slots change, the resistance and path alter, leading to a reduction in output.

My computer kept freezing. After changing the slots, the power under load stays below 1.15 volts.

At various times. It's odd when using prime95 but not so much when Chrome is open or a download starts. It feels a bit unpredictable to me. I kept the monitor on all the time and never experienced high temperatures.

I plan to check the event log at home, but I'm starting to think it might be a hardware issue. I bought the CPU and it seems like it worked perfectly.

You may want to examine a memory dump. Does it crash due to BSOD or does it simply terminate? If BSOD occurs, is the error message unchanged?

It's a basic system with the WHEA error code. The display shows a percentage indicating collected error data and restart prompts.
