i7 8700K Weird Overclocking
Hello All,
I recently purchased the H150i pro AIO cooler from Corsair and decided to attempt an overclock on my 8700K. The highest stable speed I achieved was 4.9ghz at 1.305V with no ATX offset. Running Cinebench R15 at a 1.3V overclock caused a BSOD. I managed to run the 4.9ghz at 3.2V, but I thought it would be safer to stick to lower voltages. During the Cinebench test, my temperatures stayed below 82°C.
My main concern is whether I can reach 5ghz with this cooler. I was expecting a 5ghz boost but feel like I might have missed something. I've experimented with voltages between 1.320V and 1.365V, getting around 3 to 5 seconds of Cinebench before the BSOD appears. Interestingly, when I pushed to 5ghz, my idle temperatures remained between 25-35°C. However, during overclocking, I experienced excellent idle temps of 25-35°C, but I couldn't monitor them closely because the system would crash before reaching those levels.
My setup includes:
i7 8700K
ASUS Maximus X Hero WIFI AC
ASUS 1060 GTX 6OG
Samsung 960 EVO
TridentZ RGB 2x8gb 3200mhz
650W EVGA SuperNova G3
Any advice on achieving a 5ghz overclock would be greatly appreciated. I understand my build is capable, but I want to be certain and avoid any performance issues.
I faced the same configuration and encountered identical issues with my 8700K non-delided. I achieved a 5GHz overclock but was dissatisfied with the vcore setting at 1.365. Attempting auto also led to instability, spiking to 1.4 which was unacceptable. Therefore, I opted for a 4.9Ghz configuration with an offset of 1.296v through my Gigabyte board. It seems possible to reach 5GHz, but it may require some trial and error due to various factors at that speed.
It's good to note the silicon lottery aspect. Each K-CPU offers unique and distinct optimization capabilities.
Have you explored alternative benchmarking software or tested Prime95 to assess your CPU's stability?
Regarding your LLC configurations?
LLC is configured at 6. It's interesting since I can achieve 4.8ghz across all cores with a voltage of 1.25, but I require at least 1.32V to maintain 4.9. I'm not sure how much more I can push beyond 1.37 for 5. What other adjustments could I consider?
Yes, the cooler is working properly when maintaining the temperature at 4.8 degrees.
Yes, 5Ghz is definitely not suitable for continuous use.
I prefer 4.5Ghz instead, as it avoids overloading the CPU with unnecessary clock speeds and voltages.
For the LLC, it would be better to verify the actual voltage under load. I’m confident CPU-Z will reveal something unexpected.
