I7 8700k still worth it?
I7 8700k still worth it?
Hey! So you're interested in getting into PC building, right? You started by buying used Dell and HP systems but didn’t get much out of them. Since you live in Canada, you checked Kijiji and found an i7 8700K and a Z370 ASUS motherboard for $400. You think it might be cheaper, but are they still good value? I saw a new i7 on Amazon for $560 and a memory module for $300. Thanks for your help!
Relies on what you expect versus the cost. Many continue using the 2600K 4C8T overclocked for their needs. It’s worth it when paired with an 2080Ti and an 8700K OC, especially compared to newer setups. It may not beat a 9900K OC at 1080p, but at 1440p it performs well and is quite practical. Only at 1080p does IPC become crucial for fast GPUs. Anything below 1070/1660S/2060 will work fine on this CPU, particularly with the 8700K.
Even with 1080p resolution and a 2080i display, using identical clocks shows almost no noticeable difference between the 8700k and 9700k options.
I'm aiming for a budget-friendly build under $450, and an RX 580 seems like a solid choice for that price point.
Honestly, since I'm an AMD enthusiast, this deal seems solid at the moment. The 8700K offers a good balance of performance and value, especially with its 6C/12T configuration, which should hold up well for upcoming titles. Just keep in mind that future upgrades will be limited. Edit – if you manage to snag a compatible 3600X or a high-end 3600+ B450 motherboard around the same budget, it’ll still be a solid choice because the 3600X remains faster than the 8700K.
