I've encountered many discussions about manual overclocking for the i7-8700K, but few talk about utilizing MSI's OC Genie. I'm not particularly interested in pushing my processor to its absolute limit, and my motherboard isn't top-tier (MSI Z370-A Pro). This is just a builder setup from iBuyPower. It performs well with most configurations, though it tends to run around 3.7 GHz even when the Turbo can reach 4.8 GHz. My goal is to keep close to the turbo speeds for better performance.

That being said, I opted for OC Genie instead of risking damage to my system. It offers a simple solution with just a few clicks. My main worry is that some unusual behavior has been reported with OC Genie.

OC Genie managed to bring the processor up to about 4.4 GHz (as shown in BIOS and CPUz), but the voltage stayed steady at 1.2v, matching the setting for 3.7 GHz. CPUz displays core speeds jumping dramatically between 800 and 4500. HWInfo reports the CPU package temperature fluctuating between 35 and 55°C while idle (only Chrome and a few tabs open). This might be due to the fan speed adjustments OC Genie makes, which can disable auto speeds for the CPU fan and pump fan when enabled.

Are these occurrences typical when using OC Genie?

8700k Boost operates at 4.7 GHz. It is strongly recommended to avoid using autoOC tools for this model or Intel processors in general. Here are some helpful tutorials: Coffee Lake Guide, plus YouTube content. Take your time and get your overclocking correct.
