i7-8700 (non-K) supports various RAM speeds depending on the motherboard configuration.
Hey forums, I'm using an i7-8700 and a RTX 3070 while my friend has a R5-3600 and an 1660 Ti with 32GB RAM. He's getting higher FPS and smoother gameplay without lag, even on games that need a lot of memory. He has 16GB RAM, which is enough for the games we play. I'm wondering if upgrading to at least 3200MHz RAM would make a difference for me.
No such changes expected in performance. Prices for RAM have risen, complicating the justification further. Also, boards with B series won’t support RAM beyond 2666.
I’m assuming these games support multiplayer. The "lag spikes" likely stem from factors beyond just memory speed—like your internet connection, background apps, ISP, location, or hardware specs. I wouldn’t try to boost RAM just to cut down on ping or those spikes.
I’m hoping the ping connects to the game server rather than a random site on speedtest.net. If that’s true, there are still many factors to consider beyond what I mentioned earlier; adding to the list I provided; your router, your modem, your ethernet controller on your motherboard. The best approach right now is checking whether those spikes come from your CPU, disk, or GPU. Determining the precise reason for ping spikes is likely the most challenging part of fixing computer issues.
