I've just placed an order for an i7 6700K to pair with my H110M motherboard. I'm moving up from an i5 6500 and understand Ryzen offers better value, but this involves getting a new board and Windows. I’m aware you can’t install it on an H110M, so I chose the K variant since used 6700K models without K were similar in price. The higher base clock is a plus. Before purchasing, I did some research and believe it should fit my board. However, I’m concerned about the 4 GHz base clock—will it underclock itself without a Z170 board? It has a 91 watt TDP, but since I won’t be using the integrated graphics, it should drop to around 65 watts in real life. That shouldn’t stress the board much. My main worry is whether chipset firmware will lower it below the base clock on non-Z170 boards, especially with the 4 GHz frequency and hyper-threading. I’m hoping it will run at 4 GHz, matching my 95 Hz monitor and aiming for performance similar to my RTX 2060.

It should operate smoothly at the listed speeds, those details won’t cause issues on any board built for that connector. The only advice I can give is to replace your i5 6500 cooler with something more capable if that was your setup.

You don't require a new Windows key. A fresh board paired with a 6700K CPU will suffice. No overclocking needed for the price of a 6700K—around 300USD. You can also find options like a 3600 or 3600x board along with a B450/B550 motherboard.

The 91 TDP is typically reached at stock speeds, not just when overclocking. Since you won’t be using integrated graphics, it shouldn’t approach 91 watts, but I’m still checking.

The IGPU consumes very little power, and the TDP doesn<|pad|> can be a general indicator rather than a precise measure of heat generation.

I really prefer plug and play setups. I thought I could have convinced Microsoft to move the key if I had called them, and honestly a 120 dollar Ryzen is worth more than an i7 6700K at launch plus a motherboard around 70 or 80 dollars. I spent about 230 on the CPU and cooler together, so it didn’t feel like a huge loss. Plus, it’s simpler—no need to transfer 1.8 terabytes of games.

I thought it was true because in MSI Afterburner my i5 6500 draws no more than about 30 watts when fully loaded, and it has a 65 watt TDP—maybe they just label it as 65 watts even though it never drops below 40 watts.

The Intel i7 6700K gives me around 50 FPS in intense games, which is playable for me—30 FPS is only a minor dip and usually not noticeable unless it drops significantly. With the CPU being the limiting factor, I’m getting 30 FPS in some titles, but at 1440p or higher with ultra settings, I can reach close to 60 FPS. If I switch to a Ryzen, I could lower the settings to boost frame rate without sacrificing too much quality.
