i7 4790K, worth overclocking?
i7 4790K, worth overclocking?
Thanks for reaching out! I'm concerned only about your ZOTAC 780 TI in SLI. You mentioned a black screen after overclocking to 1090 clocks and 1825 memory, which was stable at lower settings but caused issues when you increased it. I checked the system drive to see if anything changed, but nothing was corrupted or damaged.
Even when overclocking is required for this chip, the available headroom is limited. 4.8 is the realistic maximum you can reach; voltages are too high and stability drops after that (based on what I've seen online, I don’t really need to overclock). Playing everything at stock settings on ultra-smooth performance is smoother than what I can actually use.
When things get more serious, you could try delidding it, applying that special liquid metal thermal paste, or even custom water cooling if you have the budget and a new processor isn’t cheaper.
I’m interested in delidding it, as I’ve heard you can see about a 20°C temperature drop.
I totally forgot about core unparking. works with i7 not all i5s. don't know about the 4690k, but the with 4790k unparked I got a 20+fps bump in bf4 ultra 1080p, and windows boots crazy fast, the swirling icon doesn't even finish loading and there's no blue screen it just hit's the desktop ready to rock.
This slaughters most overclocks if you're looking for fps gain.
I use 4.7ghz with 1.24v to boost FPS. 4.8 uses too much extra voltage for limited gain, so I stick with 4.4 and 1.175v (with SS and CS on). Adaptive voltage might be too harsh.
I was able to push the processor to 5.2 GHZ stable for an entire year so far. It operates flawlessly on the Asus MAXIMUS VII motherboard with liquid cooling. What voltage are you using?
I increased my overclock to 4.7GHz with the Noctua NH-D15, reaching a max temperature of around 77 degrees. The results aren't perfect, but I enjoy experimenting. You should definitely give it a try—it's quite enjoyable!
I also bought an i7 4790k with an ASRock Gaming Fatal1ty Z97 Killer LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDM motherboard and 16 gigs of Gskill RAM at 2133. I’m upgrading to get ready for Star Citizen and plan to overclock it to at least 4.5. Do I need water cooling for that? I currently have a 800-watt power supply with a Corsair heatsink and fan that’s quite large. What do you think?
