My PCIE 3.0 is already active, and I'm using a 1080p display at 144Hz. I expect to switch to a higher-resolution 1440p monitor with a similar refresh rate later.

I’m using just one GTX 980 and it’s still handling modern games smoothly at 1080p resolution.

Absolutely understood. You embraced a tech choice that seemed unnecessary back then, but when most folks thought 4/4 chips were more than sufficient, it paid off. I'm in line with the others here—higher resolutions and keeping GPU usage moderate (like a 5600 XT or 2060 Super) will keep things smooth.

I once thought it was smart to invest heavily right away for four years ahead, but now I’m in my late 70s. In the original post I was aiming for a 3080Ti or 3090 with a 1440p display. Mostly I work with a lot of 3D tasks that need strong GPU power. I play games occasionally, but I’m sure my CPU won’t struggle too much, since I haven’t hit 100% usage in any game yet—it usually stays between 40-60%.

It seems your software relies on the GPU for performance, but not specifically for gaming. I’m unsure how much PCIe 2 will restrict those GPUs in such applications.

I'll check how it turns out. If things go bad, I might need to invest in a newer AMD system—CPU, motherboard, RAM. It should be close to $1500 given these low prices.
