i7 3820 Stuck at 1.2 ghz
Hey everyone,
I'm facing a few issues.
My system has an i7 3820 on an MSI X79-GD45 board.
For years I ran the CPU at 1.2 GHz without noticing it—this was my first computer, built from scratch because I wasn’t sure enough to assemble it myself.
After experiencing slow gameplay and testing various BIOS power settings, I finally got it stable at around 3.8 GHz.
Then I pushed the settings higher to about 3.9 by shifting the CPU base in the BIOS from 105 to roughly 108.
It worked well overnight, but when I tried to turn it back on this morning it wouldn’t boot, just shutting off repeatedly for a few seconds.
I removed the mainboard battery to reset it, which allowed it to start properly.
Now the CPU is stuck at 1.2 GHz again, and I can’t get it back to the 3.6 MHz it was designed for.
I took screenshots from CPU-Z showing the board running with default settings after adjustments, but I’m really frustrated because it keeps locking itself at 1.2.
Currently, power usage is at 100% with no changes.
Any tips would be appreciated.

CPU – i7 3820
GPU – AMD Radeon RX 480
RAM – 32 GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHz

Verify in Bios whether Speedstep or EIST is active; if active, deactivate it.
If unsuccessful and the Frequency field remains unresponsive, update your Bios to the newest release.
This appears to be a Bios-related concern.

Check in Bios if Speedstep or EIST is enabled and if so then disable it.
If no luck and Frequency field sill grayed out then flash your Bios to the latest version.
This is most certainly a Bios issue.
My BIOS was very old indeed. Got the latest one from MSI and I'm back up to 3.7 no problem for the time being. Will keep an eye on it.
