I7-3820, I'm pretty uncertain about this situation.
To begin, I chose to try overclocking simply because I had no other good reason. Initially, my CPU operated at 1.2 GHz when idle and 3.8 GHz under load. After adjusting the settings—mainly changing the multiplier and base clock—I kept it running at 4.2 GHz continuously, never dropping during idle. Eventually, I left it on for a few days with the overclock active, but then encountered a blue screen of death due to an unstable configuration. I restored everything in BIOS without performing a factory reset and restarted Windows. Checking the CPUID HWM monitor confirmed normal performance within the expected ranges. Later, after resetting the BIOS back to defaults, the system stabilized at 4.2 GHz during idle and 1.2 GHz occasionally. I’m still puzzled by this behavior, especially since I’m new to overclocking.
