I purchased a GIGABYTE B660 GAMING X DDR4 motherboard (link provided). It currently runs an i5 12400F and I’m thinking about moving to the 12700KF model because it offers more cores and a higher base frequency. Since my board doesn’t support overclocking, I’m fine with that. I’m curious whether this board can safely run the 12700KF without overclocking. The CPU has a 125W TDP, but under heavy load it could rise. I’m unsure how much heat it would generate and whether temperatures would spike enough to risk long-term damage. I’m using Fera 5 Silentium cooling, which claims to support up to 220W TDP. Would this cooler be adequate for the 12700KF in normal operation? Any guidance would be appreciated.

The upgrade was considered because the 12700kf isn't significantly better in games, and performance differences may depend on your GPU. The cooler might not make a noticeable impact, and a higher-end cooler like the Thermalright Assassin 120 would likely cost around 30-40 dollars and be sufficient for that CPU.

I’d prefer a 13600K model. It’s about the same cost, offers better overall performance (sacrificing 2 PCores for 4 Ecores), includes more cache, and there’s no chance of degradation at non-OC settings. Plus, the patch is coming up in two weeks.

No, the issues only affected non-OCD CPUs.

It might be uncommon, but voltage spikes are expected to happen less often. As mentioned, the patch will arrive soon, and in the meantime, keeping the max SoC voltage at 1.45V should avoid issues (check Buildzoid for more info). The ATM 13600K looks like a solid choice, priced near a 7600X version, especially with fast 7200MT RAM.

I’m unsure about receiving either the 12700KF or 13600KF, but I suggest going with a B660 or B760 (the more affordable option). It performs significantly better than this low-quality board and includes an external clock generator, allowing you to overclock if you obtain the 12700KF or any Alder Lake model.

did you mean vcore volt? well, it makes sense they'd degrade running above 1.45v at 100c even if i wouldn't run 1.5v at 90c on my 32nm chips, let alone 100c (i’d only be comfortable up to 1.4v at 100c).
