I7 12700K operates at a peak frequency capped at 2095 MHz
Hello, I recently built a computer with an i7 12700K. The weird thing is that I can't make the Performance cores to operate over 2095 Mhz. Super weird. According to CPU-Z the multiplier should go from 8 to 49, but I can't get it higher than 21. This is under stress: Those are the components I have: Windows 11 Pro i7-12700K Prime Z690-P D4 Memory TeamGRoup UD4 3600 (TCAS 14) With XMP I profile configured. Samsung 980 PRO 1TB Corsair 850 W Power No graphics card, since I'm waiting for a good deal. I'm googling it but no clue on where to start looking. Some more info: Windows shows the use at 66% (which is weird is CPU is working at a 42 % of it's max frecuency) but Armory Crate of Asus is showing full frequency when at 2.1 GHz. Thanks a lot in advance to anyone who can give me a clue on what's happening. Jose
It's unusual given the reported 3.6GHz performance. The temperatures appear to be a concern, and it seems thermal or power constraints might be limiting results. Voltage and power usage also need clarification—seems like efficiency is improving but not reaching maximum potential.
Looks like a power limit to me. I'm sure u would have mentioned thermal throttling by now if that was happening.
Thanks. Since I've been trying (guessing mostly) some things. And I think I found the thing limiting me. I'm sharing it in detail here, in case someone else have the same issue. TL;TR: There is a tool called AI Suite 3 from Asus that by defaults sets the computer in battery safe mode, and limits the CPU. Detailed: Power limits, I checked, and I checked & removed all places where there is a limitation. So now it is unlimited. But it is weird because the only place I've found a power limitation was at 25W, and I was already over this limit before. So I presume this limit was not applying. Then I found that I have installed AI Suite 3 from Asus (part of the standard tools). In the tool I didn't find anything special until I've found this option in the task bar: ASUS Mini Bar, when cliking it this ugly widgets shows on the screen (I hate those widgets) It allows to slect a mode. The leave is the battery save, that limits the multiplier to 21. Click on the rocket and the limitation disappears. I removed the app from executing at startup and problem solved. Now If I have a 1 thread stress I can get to the high multipliers. If I stress all the CPU (20 threads) then it reaches 47 (not the 50) and rest there. So It seems to me that when all cores are used that's the limit in the multiplier. Thanks for the ideas!!
