I've been thinking about upgrading from my Intel i5k to an i7k. I've seen some newer titles list i7 as the requirement, which makes me curious. If it weren't necessary, I'd likely avoid it. Current setup: Intel Core i5 4690K, Galaxy GeForce GTX 780, Corsair Hydro Series H100i, ASUS Z97, and a power supply.

No current titles require an I7. Once games begin utilizing more than four threads, an I7 becomes advisable. Your existing I5 should suffice at the moment.

Games won’t require an i7 anytime soon. Still, they’ll definitely gain from having one. I’m not sure it’s worth investing in at the moment, since your current CPU is solid.

You don’t require an i7 for gaming. I can confidently say you won’t need it in the next 1-2 years either. An i5 performs just as well, so let go of the idea and enjoy your games on i5.

It seems unnecessary to upgrade unless you plan to leverage hyper-threading effectively.

Hyperthreading serves best for video editing tasks. For a gaming PC, pairing the 4690k with the GTX 780 offers optimal performance.

I’d go for the 17k, that’s quite a sum. You could invest it in an i5 and still have some left over.
