I recently installed this computer a few months back and everything is working well. My setup includes an MSI 1650 Super i5 9600k with 16GB RAM, a 3200MHz clock speed, and a 4GB SKILL memory. However, lately I've noticed some games are slowing down unexpectedly. They take longer to load, and my CPU clock has dropped to around 0.78GHz for certain titles. When I close the game, it restarts back to normal speeds. I suspect thermal throttling might be the issue, especially since I play more demanding games than Overwatch. I might consider adding a cooler, but I'd appreciate some advice on how to resolve this. Thanks!

I have a shadow darkflow. It remains discreet, and I assumed it might face thermal issues later, but it has held up well thus far.

800MHz (close enough to 0.78GHz) is the typical idle frequency for most Intel processors I'm familiar with. This suggests either your game doesn't require enough CPU power to run at higher speeds, or your power settings are too strict and preventing it from doing so. Beyond that, what software are you using? Some older programs often give inaccurate readings.

I recently reattempted Borderlands 3 on my PC, which normally runs smoothly, but the system clock slowed down and stabilized at 0.78GHz. MSI Afterburner shows full usage, while Task Manager indicates only about 20% utilization at that speed.

It seems most titles face similar challenges despite the genre. The processor speed can jump to around 4.2Ghz, which might explain why some games struggle with timing issues.

Review the throttle stop settings—it shows which limits are applied to your CPU. You can turn them off yourself, though that carries some risk. It’s helpful to keep an eye on temperatures during this process.
