Hello. I purchased an i5 9400f to upgrade my i3 7100. Apart from the processor and stock cooler, I haven’t made any other changes. The 9400f doesn’t power on at all—it only spins the fans briefly before shutting down. I attempted to remove the graphics card or memory, unplugged everything, and reconnected it on the motherboard, but nothing worked. I tried again with the 7100, and it starts normally, boots, and runs Windows. I’ve switched back to the 7100 until I can diagnose the issue with the new CPU. Is this just a faulty CPU? The 7100 uses LGA 1151 and the 9400 is LGA 1151v2, but the sockets are identical. The PSU is 450W, which exceeds what the system needs (only 1050Ti 4GB). I’m unsure if there are any forums or guides where these two models are compatible together. Any suggestions?
The connectors match, yet 6th/7th generation devices require 100/200 series boards while 8th/9th generation CPUs need 300 series boards. The board and CPU aren't compatible with each other. It seems you're facing an issue because your motherboard only works with 6th and 7th generation processors. You'll have to purchase a different motherboard to support the 9th generation i5.
Can you bring back the CPU? Replacing the motherboard might open up better alternatives.
