Your setup offers solid performance, but the i5 8600K could become a bottleneck depending on the GPU you choose. Aiming for at least a 3070 or higher is a good target. For value, consider the Intel Core i7-10700K or i7-11700K as upgrades that balance cost and performance gains.

It depends on the power needs of new games and the performance of next-gen graphics cards. Right now, your 8600K might struggle with a 2080Ti in very demanding CPU-heavy titles such as Battlefield 5.

Would a 8700k still justify the upgrade? For hyperthreading, I’m uncertain if a 9900k would be enough for my current setup.

The 8700K could be better, and a 9900K seems likely to perform well at regular speeds in your board. However, I’d likely skip both options since they’ll be costly even on the used side. I’d wait a bit longer to assess what AMD’s Zen 3 CPUs will offer. If they don’t match Comet Lake for gaming—or if Rocket Lake arrives later—then I’d consider a 10600K and a Z490 board, unless Intel releases something new then.

Considering the price difference between the 10.6GHz and 10.9GHz models, investing in additional cores and threads could be beneficial for future performance needs.

By then, you'll probably need 20 threads for gaming, and we're likely already using DDR5. Right now, the 10900K doesn't really surpass the 10600K in gaming capabilities. If you're doing content creation, you might prefer Ryzen, but I'd hold off on Zen 3. Zen 2 would probably be a step back for gaming performance at the moment.

the top upgrade right now is a 10600k/3600. what i see online and from my own experience shows the 10600k is essentially the best for gaming these days. it’s not too costly, and paired with a 2070 or 5600xt and higher, you’d really stand out. unless you’re using a pc or an editing rig or just aiming for top performance, the extra 4c and 8t aren’t usually necessary. regarding bottlenecks, from what i understand, a 10600k shouldn’t be limiting a 3070 or 3080, though i’m not sure about a 3080 ti. if you get a good z490 motherboard, you could move up to a 10900k or even a 10850k in a couple of years when prices drop. this is what i’m planning. i’ll wait about two years and if prices look reasonable, i’ll trade my 10600k for a 10900k, saving around 800 bucks and getting a better CPU/motherboard combo.

I have a friend with an 8600k and he’s thinking about moving to a 3080 ti. He plans to use it for 2-3 months with the current model, then switch to Zen 3. I expect big bottlenecks in AAA titles, so if you’re aiming for a 3080 ti and need to upgrade the CPU now, I can’t be sure even an 10600k will suffice. Zen 2 isn’t really an option, so it seems like either the 10700k or the 10900k would be better choices. Thanks to Comet Lake’s efficiency, my advice is to hold off on Zen 3 until you’re ready for a more powerful build.

I was considering upgrading to a higher-end GPU like a 10600K or 10900K. Would that mean future models would also support overclocking, potentially affecting bottlenecks? Right now I’m using a 1440p monitor at 144Hz and am thinking about switching to a wider 1440p display at lower refresh rates. A Reverb G2 is already part of my setup, which explains why the upgrade is necessary.
