i5 6600k or i5 6600 overclock
i5 6600k or i5 6600 overclock
Hey everyone, what's the current status on overclocking the i5 6600?
I recently purchased a used MSI Z170A M7 motherboard and am expecting it in a few weeks.
I'm trying to decide between buying an i5-6600 or an i5-6600K.
Someone mentioned Intel is closing the gap for overclocking non-K i5 models.
Also, non-K overclocks tend to lose temperature accuracy and speed stability.
Anyone have insights or personal experience on this?
I'm looking to save money by opting for the non-K version, but if it causes issues, I might end up with the K model.
Appreciate any advice you can offer.
Sorry for the delayed reply. This looks like a solid board. The i5 6600 should handle overclocking well with non-K enabled BIOS in NOC Expert mode.
Intel asked manufacturers to implement a microcode fix to prevent Non K OC. Most of this has already been addressed early in the year. You can download a non-K enabled BIOS from one of the OC sources and proceed confidently.
Regarding the noted drawbacks:
Speed Step remains off due to fewer power management states.
Sleep functionality is intact, and Hibernate works.
Integrated GPU is turned off.
AVX performance is limited, but it shouldn’t impact most games.
CPU temperature sensor operates normally on my i3 6100.
The microcode update isn’t a concern because it’s applied automatically during every boot. Non K enabled BIOS bypasses the update. OS updates are also fine.

The microcode update isn’t a concern because it’s applied automatically during every boot. Non-K enabled BIOS bypasses the update. OS updates don’t interfere with non-K OC, and Windows Update functions normally. Just ensure you stick to a non-K enabled BIOS—no additional steps are needed for maintaining OC.
Hope this clarifies everything!
