I was considering replacing my old Lenovo G560 with a P6100 processor and 4 GB RAM. Would an i7-840QM fit? If not, what’s the best CPU option and should I go for 8 GB of memory?

What is the cost for that CPU? If it's over 20$, selling the laptop might be smarter. The RAM is cheap, 4GB costs around 4$, and 8GB is about 8$. The 840qm seems outdated, drawing a lot of power which reduces battery life and may strain the cooler. It's better to sell the laptop and buy a used 4th or 8th generation model. They'll use less power and perform better, even with an i5, because the i7 likely has a very low boost clock. The single-core 3.2GHz doesn't matter much if the core is only ~2GHz. My mom's laptop is broken, but her is an i5 4200U with 2.3GHz all-core. I can give a rough idea for Haswell with a downclocked i3 and some X58 Nehalem CPUs, but performance estimates will be off due to DDR3 and the 840qm's design. Expect a bit higher than actual performance.

The laptop lacks dedicated graphics. For that era, quad-core processors typically didn't include an integrated GPU, though dual-core models with integrated graphics would require a dual-core processor like the 620M.

Thanks. The laptop comes with built-in graphics, so I was thinking about a modest upgrade of $20-30. After that, selling the device and maybe getting a newer model with an i5 processor would be the next step.
