Maybe I'll explore them later after doing more research. Lubuntu and Ubuntu MATE seem intriguing. However, I saw Linus' Manjaro video and some Linux Mint videos using Xfce. What are your thoughts? I'm just a 'he' here, lol.

Initially I used Manjaro for a while—it's a solid distro but might be too heavy for lighter needs.

Consensus reached. Skip Manjaro for these needs—it's overly heavy and less Steam support. It feels more complicated than Ubuntu-based options. Mint offers better customization but is lighter than Lubuntu. Considering your system's speed, Lubuntu seems ideal, followed by Ubuntu Mate. Lubuntu will run faster but is less beginner-friendly as you described.

I'm uncertain about whether Steam will work with those specifications. It seems the system might still face challenges even with just Steam alone. The minimum requirements for RimWorld state it needs 4GB, which is quite standard now. Of course, I might be mistaken.

Lubuntu on the move, then—turns out I found an old Lubuntu ISO on my old drive. What a lucky coincidence! But I’m confident I can manage that 'less beginner-friendly' situation with some YouTube tips, hope it helps.

For someone who plays games at a much lower level than their ideal, she should be fine.

Use the latest update instead of older versions.

Tried RimWorld on the exact Windows machine from the old Alpha version. It actually works quite well (just a few minor graphics issues but still smooth) with small settlements. Still, it's interesting to see how it performs.

I understand this perspective but I rely on phone data tether. Maybe later I'll have access to public Wi-Fi at McDonald's, lol. I try to keep my distance in public spaces, fyi. Not the typical Karen who went out recklessly. McDonald's policies during the pandemic are actually quite strict on social distancing even for dine-in customers.
