I used my previous storage without clearing old fines, so now my i5 9400 only sees 4c 4t even after updates. I’m worried about losing my files. My old system specs were i3 8100 with 8GB RAM. I’m unsure if resetting or refreshing this PC will bring it back to 6c 6t, and everything seems legit—purchased from a store.

Start by resetting the CMOS on the motherboard—either by touching the pins directly or using the BIOS menu to restore settings to their original state. This ensures the hardware isn’t retaining incorrect configurations from the previous CPU.

Open msconfig, navigate to the Boot section, click on Advanced options... Then confirm that the number of processors checkbox is unchecked. Click OK and restart to let Windows recognize all your cores and threads.

I also forgot to note that I have a new motherboard, a Gigabyte B365mm DS3H. I assumed the motherboard wasn’t necessary, sorry for the oversight.

I also tried that, but it only displays up to four items. I looked in the task bar as well, showing four. However, resetting the PC while keeping files will retain all files, videos, photos, and similar data.

Have you confirmed the box and restarted the system? The "Number of processors" field must remain unchecked.
