I owned an i9990kf with a rather average motherboard, which was the cheapest option available back then. Now I’ve acquired an AMD Ryzen 5800X, which is definitely an upgrade. I’m not sure what the price will be, but it should help performance significantly. Also, I upgraded to a much better motherboard, which will make a big difference.

Motherboards usually don’t significantly improve performance unless you have a very poor one, but you can test it with cpubenchmark.

You're asking about the purpose of your PC. If you're using it for gaming, the performance boost won't be significant. A better motherboard might help, but only if your current one was poor; otherwise, it's tough to judge since you're on a completely different system.

The motherboard controls the power supply to the CPU. If the hardware is weak, this can affect power delivery, which in turn influences performance. This matters most for high-power CPUs, while lower-end models are less affected. For example, a 5800X running at 9900KF in games shows only a slight difference—around 1-3%—unless your 9900KF is on a very basic board, which would be noticeable but not extreme.

Sure, I notice the main benefit is achieving 5800X3D, which would significantly improve performance for cache-heavy or high-frame-rate titles. However, overall it's a minor improvement compared to the previous generation, especially since frame time remains a consistent issue.

Motherboards don't boost performance by themselves unless you're enabling newer parts with quicker connections to fit on the board.
