I notice that the drivers I’m using for my nVidia card (1050) cause X to not start, yet the older stable driver (391) does. I’m currently on KDE, but encountered the same problem on a standard Ubuntu system with GNOME.

Interestingly, I'm using GNOME on Manjaro with the newest drivers working smoothly.

Ubuntu LTS offers a great balance of stability and performance. Updating drivers is straightforward using the repositories, and most software here is current, having been thoroughly tested before release. Unless there’s a critical driver absence, the only option is to switch to a newer distribution.

I notice many users seem to be working smoothly with the newest drivers. Perhaps my card is just a coincidence, but I’m not sure why I should switch from the stable versions except for Vulkan support.
