Most of the time I've kept spending little on upgrades by trading in my old setup. The 1950X was a big expense, yet it proved to be quite frustrating and let down. The core layout made my Asetek cooler incompatible, while the Enermax LiqTech performed well for three weeks before failing. After that, it kept breaking again. I found out the build quality was lacking—corrosion and blockages set in quickly. Eventually, I couldn't run my 4.0/4.2 all-core overclock because the Asetek couldn't cope, even with stock parts. That shows how crucial the die layout is for these devices. The stock clocks were unreliable, often trapping one or two cores at maximum speed while the rest stuck at 2.2ghz idle. Gaming wasn't great thanks to the NUMA architecture, but it was even worse with faulty clocks. DMI 4 is still pending (expected for the 11th gen), and even then it would be limited by the third drive. To be fully free, I'd need at least one NVMe drive on CPU lanes—something the X570 offers without taking up a GPU slot. The biggest concern is whether the X670 will arrive later this year. If so, and if it comes with a nicer design than the X570 Unify, I'd be happy to upgrade. If not, I might still be able to return it for the Z490 if needed. It's a trade-off between stability and speed, especially when compared to the more reliable X570.

Generally, as a commodity that serves as a simple swap, it should be fine. The only thing you'll miss from Intel to AMD is the IMC—it's just not as strong.

It bothers me how motherboard makers focus first on appearance and then shift to performance, especially in cooling. The plastic I/O cover restricts airflow, while the VRMs sit on a block of metal with few fins. This approach seems to prioritize looks over real heat management. That’s why I chose the Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master—it features genuine aluminum fins directly on the VRMs, providing better thermal performance.

DMI 4 or PCIe 4.0 x4 is sufficient for two 3.0 x4 SSDs without any restrictions. The third M.2 slot on an X570 board connects directly to the CPU, whereas on a Z490 it comes through the chipset. Regarding the IMC, I have 32GB of 3200MHz C16 RAM, which has been thoroughly tested on the 1950X—perfect performance until I had to manually adjust timing settings, which eventually led to a soft-bricked board. For now, I’m not expecting more RAM, though 64GB might be possible if prices are right. The Z390’s lack of sufficient VRMs has been a concern; my past experiences with Gigabyte BIOSes have left me wary. If other brands had better VRMs, I’d be much happier with my 9900KS setup. With the X570 Unify, the entire cooling system is integrated into the heatsink, lowering VRM temps by another 5°C compared to the X570 ACE. It also saves about £50, as I won’t need RGB lighting and prefer the Unify’s design. The VRMs are more than sufficient even for the 3950X, and I’m confident they’ll work well with the 4950X unless the X670 Unify comes along. I might have delayed upgrading to Intel 10th Gen, but keeping the 9900KS cool at stock voltage would have been challenging. The 3950X and future 4950X offer more cores, which I’d definitely appreciate. If things go wrong, I’ll have a month to return the X570 Unify and 3600 for the Z490 Unify, plus a compatible CPU—though it might just be a Pentium given Intel’s pricing. On another note, this issue started as a VRM concern and escalated to a red-team situation, as I’m due back Friday. Right now, work demands are high, and the board keeps failing if it overheats.

I wasn't aware of that, but if you had such a great experience with Zen 1, then Zen 2 will definitely be better—though their IMC is still a bit average. It's clearly a huge improvement over Zen 1.
