I've been searching for the right information but it's hard to sort through all the conflicting data. I'm looking for Linux options that work well with SGI Octane workstations, aiming for something more modern than Irix. Debian seems like a possibility, though I'm unsure if Mips64 support for Octane is reliable.

The setup relies on a specific system configuration. Gentoo works best with obsecure hardware.

The first setup includes two dual 195Mhz R10000SC units—one with 256Mb RAM, the other with 512Mb RAM—each paired with a 4Gb HDD and IRIX 6.5.13 OS. The second unit is a 250Mhz R10000SC with 512Mb RAM, 18Gb HDD, and the same OS. The third model is a 225Mhz R10000SC with 512Mb RAM, 18Gb HDD, and IRIX 6.5.13. You mentioned flexibility in combining hardware, so you could consolidate all components into one enclosure if desired, but ideally running all three would be best.

It seems there are two versions of Debian for mips64. I don't have much experience with it, but I came across this list.
