I started my MOBO using only the CPU, RAM, and NVME connected, just to verify its operation before assembling the full system. Unluckily, I didn’t add a heatsink or thermal paste, and shortly after I noticed a persistent low-frequency hum from the top of the unit. I assumed it was just coil whine, not a sign of overheating, and there was no smoke or odor. After a few attempts, the MOBO worked again, though each boot lasted only about ten seconds and it likely entered Windows lock screen mode. There’s no indication of a damaged socket, pins, or any visible signs of overheating. Since I have an I7-9700K, it probably throttled before reaching the critical temperature. It seems safe to say my CPU is likely fine, right? Thanks!

The sound was probably caused by the CPU. Running a quad-core or higher without proper cooling—such as thermal paste, heatsink, or fan—can put excessive strain on the CPU. It’s best to perform a stress test on it.

It suggests the CPU might still be functional. A fried CPU shows signs like overheating, unusual noises, or sudden shutdowns. Testing it for 10 seconds could trigger these issues.

The top of the CPU and maybe the thermal paste may darken. You’ll notice a smoky odor, and it’s likely to begin after about 10 seconds. Another approach is to check if your CPU is underperforming.

If your thermal paste has been sitting for over a year or a few years, it's best to refresh your CPU by cleaning it and reapplying the paste.

I didn’t apply thermal paste to the CPU. I began from scratch. There’s no black residue anywhere. I even checked the socket and everything looks normal. No smoke odor detected.

Because this didn’t occur, the device stayed cool. Clearly, you shouldn’t run a bare CPU for extended periods, but running it for just 10 seconds won’t cause harm.
