I just wanted to express exactly what I hope and wish to happen. I appreciate the idea of a micro-ATX and mini-ITX board that can be upgraded to professional levels using just an expansion card, and even more by connecting them in a chain. I’m interested in seeing setups where the first PCIe slot counts from the CPU, possibly with multiple lanes—maybe 4 or 8—and there’s a dedicated second slot for extra power when needed. I think it should be positioned at the front because GPUs require significant space and it’s hard to predict their needs. A second slot could be reserved for additional power, while a third might serve as an extra expansion point. I imagine the GPU PCIe slot should be at the top, with the card flipped to avoid interfering with other slots and improve cooling. There should also be a third slot for more expansion cards.
I envision it being useful because GPUs are bulky, so knowing their space requirements upfront is key. The PCIe slot for the GPU should be at the top, with a bifurcated chip to allow adding more cards later. The design might include a small slot under the GPU for a third PCIe card, giving flexibility.
Motherboards could offer two main expansion paths: one for professional upgrades and another for additional PCIe slots. I believe manufacturers will produce fewer models, which should lower costs due to simpler production and higher component usage.
Using more bifurcation chips could make these setups cheaper and more versatile, supporting a wider range of devices. For instance, focusing on USB/USB4/M.2/Network would let users customize their daisy-chain mix. Ultimately, I think this approach could make storage solutions more compact, with options for multiple PCIe lanes and creative expansion layouts without changing the core functionality.
The main problem with your concept is that 4.0 and 5.0 tracing presents a huge engineering hurdle without sacrificing performance or introducing instability. The further the data travels between you and the CPU or chipset, the harder it becomes. I don’t foresee any adaptability at this level until there’s a significant advancement in maintaining signal quality over long distances. Regarding the slot advantage, riser functionality remains intact.
The expansion card uses just a standard PCI-E port, nothing special or new. It doesn’t stand out in consumer use. A 5cm bridge seems minor for a small 3PCI-E board connected to a mini-board with a bifurcation chip. I’m not referring to long cables or big setups; it’s about using unused spaces creatively—like on top, flat back, or compact layouts—to improve the motherboard’s performance, such as adding extra power for GPUs or placing connectors in new spots.
