I purchased extra Xeon E7-8850 v2 units.
I was scanning the area to locate a suitable motherboard. It didn’t help much with Intel Ark, since I needed one for their boards. The CPUs would be fine in place, but I wanted to see if I could make them work. Any suggestions for affordable options? The ultimate resource would be a guide that lists compatible boards, as most sellers don’t provide complete details. Would this model fit? https://www.ebay.com/itm/373354695282?ep...SwGAhfuCs0 Then I’d like advice on finding a cooler for these components.
Are you sure? Here’s the link again. These are two distinct sockets. They won’t fit in Socket R (LGA2011), meaning only E7 models would work, not i7s or E5s... Source: https://www.anandtech.com/show/7773/inte...compatible Edited August 5, 2021 by svmlegacy
You'd pretty much have to buy a rack mount server for the CPU's. V3's or V4's wouldn't be any easier, as it's still the same socket. Here's an example of a motherboard: https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/m...ard/X10QBI Keep in mind you'd also need the Memory cards (At least one for each CPU): Supermicro MB-X10QBI-MEM1 Rev 1.01 (Rev 2.0+ is only for v3/v4), along with an I/O card: Supermicro AOM-X10QBi-A/L. Registested or Load Reduced memory is also a requirement. Not standard DDR3 DIMM's. Pretty much all Socket R2 boards are like this, The only really standard thing about the X10QBi is the ATX power connections. Many servers use proprietary supplies/connections for this.
