Today I purchased a laptop from my school without any loans, and I noticed they installed a key-logger and a program called "sterok remote desktop access." I’m wondering if it’s legal for the school to do this. It seems like some kind of surveillance is happening, which feels intrusive. If I were to change the settings, what consequences could I face?

If you purchased it and you're the owner, and the school no longer has it, proceed to format the drive.

You can obtain a fresh .iso operating system by downloading it from the internet or torrent sites.

You acquired it as if it were yours, or does the institution own it and you're using it on a lease?

They usually handle it this way so problems become simpler and can be resolved remotely. If you manage it yourself, you can remove it. But if your school provides it, you must keep it available.

If you have the legal right to it, you can modify it and install a new Windows version, but they won’t be able to intervene.

If you're the genuine owner, set up a fresh operating system right away. If the institution is permitted to offer one, that's a murky situation. I'm curious about why it appears there. I don't believe schools are trying to compromise you... Anyway, remove it as soon as possible.

The keylogger could have been used for administrative tasks involving children, perhaps they didn’t reinstall the operating system when they sold it. Since you purchased the laptop, you’re free to handle it however you see fit. Clear or delete the logger at your convenience.

You have purchased it legally, so proceed with reinstalling the operating system.

No, I shouldn't be the owner of the laptop. You mentioned you were giving money for a grant and then asked them to order something, but you paid in cash. It seems there was a misunderstanding about ownership.
