With Windows 10 on the way, I think upgrading from Windows 7 makes sense. I’m testing Windows 8.1 but had to reinstall Windows 7 quickly after using it. It seems similar to Windows 7 but with a new interface.

The goal of using Windows 8 is essentially the same as Windows 7, but with a different interface. You can get Windows 10 for free instead.

Upgrade to StartIsBack or the Classic Shell to avoid many issues when moving from version 7 to 8/8.1. I suggest using StartIsBack—it costs $5 but performs much better than Classic Shell. You could also clean up unnecessary software and switch default programs to their desktop versions (like picture viewers). Functionality remains similar, so it makes sense to keep 7 until the next update.

This version of Windows 10 is expected to be available in a few months. You seem to be considering purchasing it.

I suggest testing it without any modifications—it works fine on its own. 8.1 is clearly superior, though it's fully functional with add-ons.
