1. No idea what you mean by "everything". 'Windows' is not a single file. You're looking to save just your personal files.
Not application installs or anything else.
2. If the drive does not format correctly, you have larger problems.

This process requires only the connected SSD. The condition of the HDD does not matter.

For a clean installation of Windows, ensure there is just one connected drive. Your HDD should be disconnected and unaffected. You must remove all partitions on that drive at the beginning of the setup when they appear. Windows will install into the remaining unallocated space and create the required partitions. Avoid manually formatting anything.

Sure, I'm moving the files to my HDD now and then I'll take them off the PC.

It's a good time to remember the importance of regularly backing up your crucial documents, preferably with several copies. If you find yourself facing a risk of losing vital files because of a drive failure, this highlights a significant data security concern that requires immediate attention. It's a fundamental responsibility, similar to maintaining your vehicle's maintenance or furnace filters.

it's worth considering that the hdd might be the reason. after you removed it from the pc during formatting, it hasn't stopped freezing.

It's quite likely. Have you performed any checks on the HDD?
