I need to fix my wifi
I've faced similar issues with my internet while gaming for years. It seems to be worsening again. My router is in the opposite corner of my apartment, and I'm using Xfinity. The speeds at my desk are far from what I expect. Moving the router would help, but we're stuck with that coaxial cable that's permanently installed. The real issue isn't just speed—it's the signal strength. My Wi-Fi drops briefly on my PC, causing me to lose connection mid-game. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks for reading!
I suggest purchasing a simple Ethernet cable, nothing advanced. If you prefer Wi-Fi over cable, consider buying a high-gain antenna for your PC and possibly a router. Ultimately, the decision depends on your needs—cable may still be better in some cases. Edited May 16, 2021 by Liam danu
Choose a dedicated WiFi 6 or 6E router and turn off the built-in Wi-Fi on your cable box. WiFi 6 offers more than just faster speeds—it provides improved range and stability, which helps any wireless device perform better, regardless of whether it supports WiFi 6. Create distinct SSIDs for both 2.4 and 5GHz networks, and assign only high-priority devices to the 5GHz band. Place IoT gadgets and less critical wireless equipment on the 2.4GHz band. This setup minimizes latency for your important devices, especially since IoT devices often require constant communication.
You’re dealing with an internet gateway rather than a router. This device usually includes a Docsis 3.0 or 3.1 cable modem along with a router. They often struggle with poor WiFi performance. In my view, it’s usually wiser to purchase a separate modem and router. Although this might cost more upfront, you’ll generally achieve better results. Also, you’re likely being billed around $13 per month for the gateway rental, which jumps to $25 if you opt for unlimited data. Xfinity lists retail devices you can buy, and under FCC rules, cable operators may permit customers to use their own gear if they choose. We’ve owned our SB6141 cable modem for 7 or 8 years. When the rental rate was about $10 a month, we saved a lot of money over the years.
