Sure, your Dell OptiPlex 790 i3 2120 with 2GB RAM is a solid setup. For compatible RAM, you can use DDR4 modules up to 3200MHz. Make sure the capacity matches your system needs—typically 8GB or more for smooth performance.

The processor supports only DDR3 memory, which restricts your options. What scenario needs additional capacity? The device is quite outdated, making a larger upgrade less appealing. It would also help to know the budget constraints you're working with.

Country? Budget? Purpose? Share a picture of the mobo and upload the ram with its label. If the mobo has four slots, purchase three more 2GB RAMs and you’ll have eight GB. Eight GB sticks aren’t worth much more than $8. Four GB won’t cost much more than $4, and two GB should be around $2 or less. Who cares about 1 GB sticks except overclockers like me—they’re usually priced similarly to the 2GB ones.

CPU needs 32 GB or more, so I recommend 16 GB instead.

It’s possible to use any DDR3 RAM, even if you’re on a tight budget. Just make sure the components fit your system and are compatible.

Ensure you're using RAM at JEDEC-approved rates and compatible with your CPU (DDR3 1066/1333). DDR3 remains DDR3. Any solution needing overclocking or XMP is risky unless the memory supports those speeds—even then, JEDEC speeds should suffice. Higher speeds usually aren't necessary.

Are you certain about the exact model? Just capture a photo of the RAM to verify before purchasing. You mentioned a specific number—2 slot or 4 slot MMO? For 2 slots, you’ll need to remove the RAM stick, while 4 slots allow adding three extra 2GB sticks. The 1600 DDR3 will downclock accordingly. Non-P/Z chipsets won’t fit, so XMP RAM isn’t worth it. You don’t need expensive heat spreaders just to reach top speeds; good RAM modules and PCBs help, but a solid PCB is useless if paired with a bad IC. I’m too budget-conscious to buy from Hyundai or CFRS. I went with Samsung GDies—they can handle 3100+. Imc limit applies, though. Maybe a Westmere imc or better Nehalem board could push it to around 3600.

I checked the details, and it's a 4-slot motherboard. I'm wondering if it supports any DDR3 or only certain brands/models.

does that imply you can use any DDR3 model without it working? Yes, mixing RAM from different brands could cause issues unless you adjust the specifications. Your cousin’s advice is correct—mixing RAM from various companies might not function properly unless you downgrade the speeds.
