I have the cox gateway with a 500mbps plan and the NETGEAR N300 Wall Plug Version Wi-Fi Range Extender. I connected my Ethernet to the PC using the extender, but the speed was very slow. Is the extender causing this issue? Should I get a new one that supports the same speed as my modem?

Ideally, it’s better to have a device that operates at comparable speeds to your router’s rated performance.

Network setup has shifted to focus on connectivity options. The extender should have a "Fast Ethernet" port, though its speed is only 100mbps. Ideally, connecting directly via Ethernet from the router would be preferable. If that isn't feasible, using Wi-Fi for the PC instead of relying on the limited Ethernet port in the range extender is likely the better choice.

It depends on your usage and setup. If you're experiencing lag, consider checking your internet speed or optimizing other devices. Otherwise, it can be a reliable solution.

I'll attempt to insert the Ethernet cable through a wall mount and link it to the router.

I’ll likely have to place my Wi-Fi somewhere for stronger coverage, and my motherboard won’t perform well until I upgrade it in 2022.

You won’t reach your full 500mbps speed on Wi-Fi unless you’re using the latest technology and are very close to the router. At that speed, it’s almost like you’re connecting via Ethernet. Also, adding a range extender will likely cut your maximum performance and slow things down, which is terrible for online games.
