I recently changed my PC from an i5-5600 to an i7-9700k. Whenever I use the i7, the lights flash briefly and then the system shuts down. I've tried updating the BIOS, but the issue persists. Have you explored other troubleshooting steps?

It seems you're referring to a specific board model. I believe you're thinking of the 6500 series, but it's important to confirm compatibility with newer CPUs. A 9th generation processor wouldn't fit directly unless you use a compatible board.

Only Intel could match AMD's approach to socket compatibility.

The two processors share the identical socket, but when using Intel products you must replace the motherboard...

It's an MSI B250 Carbon pro from previous discussions; I think I'll need a new graphics card that works with 9th generation CPUs, which is disappointing but fine.

Backward compatible with 7th and 6th generation Intel Core™, Pentium, and Celeron processors using LGA 1151 connectors. Not suitable for other platforms.

You need to purchase a new motherboard. Ideally one that supports a Z370 chipset.

Z370 doesn't ensure stability, just B365 and Z390. With your B250 board, overclocking seems unnecessary. Consider the more affordable i7 9700F or 9700, then return the 9700K. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/W4848d/...684i79700f
